CFP: Writing Spaces: Seeks Proposals for the 3rd Volume

Writing Spaces: Readings on Writing is an open textbook series for composition seeking proposals for essays for our 3rd volume. Each Writing Spaces book contains peer-reviewed collections of essays all composed by teachers for students, with each chapter freely available for download from our website under a Creative Commons license.

Volumes in Writing Spaces: Readings on Writing offer multiple perspectives on a wide-range of topics about writing. In each chapter, authors present their unique views, insights, and strategies for writing by addressing the undergraduate reader directly. Drawing on their own experiences, these teachers-as-writers invite students to join in the larger conversation about developing nearly every aspect of their craft. Consequently, each essay functions as a standalone text that will easily complement other selected readings in writing or writing-intensive courses across the disciplines at any level. Thus with your submissions and the publication of subsequent volumes of essays, you will contribute to building a large web library of student-centered instructional essays, one that all writing teachers can use in the composition classroom.

Writing Spaces: Readings on Writing, Vol. 3 will continue with the theme of first year composition addressed in its first two volumes. As we continue to cover a wide range of topics about writing suitable for first year composition audiences, Vol. 3 will also include two special sections of essays that address the following topics:

  1. Essays that introduce students to specific genres or unique writing contexts that they might encounter in first year writing classes, such as writing for the sciences, creative writing, writing reviews (e.g., movies, events, books), narrative writing, writing for service learning, etc.
  2. Essays that present students with ways to improve writing technique, particularly style and/or voice, covering topics such as imitation, sentence combining, sentence extension, functional grammar, rhetorical grammar, point of view, rhythm and sentence variety, etc. The focus of these essays will not be grammatical correctness or avoidance of error. Instead, the essays will focus on positive ways to improve sentences.

Potential authors should look through the essays from the 1st volume (our 2nd volume is in revision with a projected fall 2010 release date) to get a better understanding of what Writing Spaces is all about (see http://writingspaces.org/essays/). Because each chapter in Writing Spaces is an essay, authors will want to strike a balance between providing instruction and creating a text that demonstrates excellent essay writing, with an appropriate and strong, engaging voice for a student audience. An essay could provide students with good writing advice and strategies. Or it might exemplify the type of essay writing that presents perspectives that stimulate critical thinking and invigorate class conversations.

Chapters in this collection could draw on personal experiences and include narrative writing. Student voices and examples are encouraged (student permission required), and original or credited visuals can be included in the text (permission required). Collaboratively written essays are also welcome.

Each proposal should be a 400-500 word abstract that clearly states the focus and purpose of the essay and briefly outlines the working structure of the piece. Furthermore, abstracts should indicate whether or not and how student voices and/or visuals will be included. Now, sometimes authors use part of the proposal to try to argue for the importance or need for the topic/approach for the chapter. Editors are best equipped to evaluate your proposal if you describe the chapter, as you intend to write it, in as much detail as possible. That's the best argument you can give for your text.

Proposals are due by August 16, 2010 September 1, 2010, and are to be submitted online via the Writing Spaces website as a .doc, .pdf, .rtf, or .odt file. Final submitted chapters will be approximately 4,000 to 6,000 words. Editors will review proposals by November 1, 2010, and will invite some authors to prepare manuscripts for editorial board review. The publication of the 3rd volume is planned for December of 2011.
