Creative Commons Licenses
Writing Spaces’ chapter essays in Readings on Writing are made available under Creative Commons licenses. Consult the specific CC license located at the bottom of the first page of the chapter to understand the rights the license provides.
All Creative Commons licenses used with Writing Spaces’ essays require that the license be included on any redistribution of the work and that attribution of the original author and source of publication be provided.
Writing Spaces’ Interpretation of “Non-commercial”
Non-commercial use in Creative Commons licensed material means that users may not sell, profit from, or commercialize Writing Spaces’ OER materials. The following guidelines provide some clarification of this use.
- Users may not sell or directly profit from Writing Spaces’ materials.
- Determination of commercial vs. non-commercial purpose is based on the use, not the user. Materials may be used by individuals, institutions, governments, corporations, or other businesses whether for-profit or non-profit so long as the use itself is not a commercialization of the materials or a use that is directly intended to generate sales or profit.
- Incidental charges to recover reasonable reproduction costs may be permitted. This would not include the sale of a course packet from a copy shop to students where the copy shop profits off the sale of the materials, whether a university copy shop or a commercial one.
