Call for Proposals: Activities & Assignments Archive @ Writing Spaces

Writing Spaces: Readings on Writing, an open textbook series for undergraduate composition, is now seeking proposals for the Activities and Assignments Archive. As an open-access companion resource to the Writing Spaces textbook series, the Activities and Assignments Archive offers pedagogical resources grounded in current practice and scholarship. Each document presents a pedagogical activity or assignment curated by teacher-scholars for writing students and reviewed by the Writing Spaces editorial team.

We invite proposals on a wide range of topics in writing studies. In particular, we would appreciate contributions that focus on the following topics as they have emerged in light of our survey of readers, editorial board interests, and our review of previous issues:

  • materials designed to assist new instructors with course creation
  • teaching the foundational concepts of genre
  • memory, arrangement, or argumentation concepts in the classroom
  • ethical engagement with generative AI (e.g. ChatGPT, Copilot, Jaspr, Ryter)
  • community / collaborative writing projects or guidelines for special writing events
  • multimodal composition practices (zines, podcasting, Inky, Twine)
  • reading-for-writing (critical reading for academic writing or the process of reading rhetorically, deep reading practices, critical reading skills, etc.)
  • grammar and style assignments or activities
  • techniques and approaches for student-centered peer review (ex. Eli Review)
  • engaging with marginalized, multilingual, or students with disabilities
  • approaches to teaching first-generation or non-traditional students
  • issues concerning racial and linguistic justice
  • resources on assessment practices (such as interpreting and implementing feedback from instructors or peers), rubrics, grading approaches (or relevant alternatives, such as “ungrading”), and reflection / metacognitive writing
  • assignments / activities / lessons specifically designed for online / hybrid classes
  • teaching efforts related to writing for wellness or writing for well-being
  • any activities or assignments that engage the use of Writing Spaces materials

Each proposal should consist of a 300-word abstract that clearly summarizes the proposed activity or assignment. If you have not taught with or used the Activities and Assignments Archive on Writing Spaces yet, please make sure to familiarize yourself with the current publications. Proposals are due no later than March 15th, 2024, and are to be submitted as a .doc, .pdf, .rtf, or .odt file via email to editors@writingspaces.org, with “AAA Proposal, [Title]” in the subject line. Editors will review proposals by April 15th, 2024 and will invite selected authors to submit full-length manuscripts by June 1st, 2024. Since the review process involves only the editorial team, contributors can expect a request for revisions by July 15th, 2024 with finalized revisions due by August 7th, 2024. The final publication to the AAA website is expected to occur by October 1st, 2024.
